britteryikes:

I hate when people relate light-skinned hierarchy to the history of slavery as if light-skinned women were somehow better off than dark-skinned women just because they were most commonly house slaves. I guess, on top of being equally as abused as the others, being sexually…

I believe lighter complexioned women did and still do have it better off than a lot of darker skin women. Especially in western societies the more Eurocentric you look the more accepted you are. Sure, even light skin women can be discriminated against, because they’re still black. BUT I really do believe that lighter skin women go through a different kind of discrimination than darker skin women have and still do. Society to this day stresses that light and or pale skin is ideal, and colorism engrained in the black community through slavery and other intolerance throughout history displays that if you have a lighter complexioned partner you’ve found yourself a prize, and hopefully your offspring will be not as dark so they’ll be more accepted into society. If you’re light it’s often hinted that you’re more beautiful, innocent, and pure due to Eurocentric beauty standards which still prevail today. How light you are can really provide you with a privilege over those who are way darker.
